A New Citizenship Test For Australia Has Been Announced

17 Sep

Do you embody Australian values? Are you unsure of what that means? As of today, the government has announced a new addition to the citizenship test and these Australian values will officially be put to the test.

In a release conveniently timed for National Citizenship Day, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) have introduced a new multi-choice section which will consist of five different questions regarding Australian values.

Currently, the citizenship test has three separate categories and the requirement is to score at least 75% in order to receive Australian citizenship.

The three citizenship categories are:

  • Australia and it’s people
  • Australia’s democratic beliefs, rights and liberties
  • Government and the law in Australia

The new category after November 15th 2020 will be:

  • Australian values

You will be required to answer all five Australian value questions correctly and also still score 75% overall.

Sample Questions:

According to SBS, these questions may be along the lines of:

  • Should people in Australia make an effort to learn English?
  • In Australia, can you encourage violence against a person or group of people if you have been insulted?
  • In Australia, are people free to choose who they marry or not marry?
  • Do you agree that men and women should be provided equality of opportunity when pursuing their goals and interests?

As always, resources will be made available prior to the test and it is strongly encouraged to study for the test prior. It is also highly recommended that you take the practice test first to give yourself an indication of where you may need to improve.

As always, should you have any question about lodging a visa and moving towards PR or citizenship, book a consultation with one of our wonderful migration agents and we may be able to help.
