Are you here on a Working Holiday Visa? Are you thinking about doing your regional work? What do you actually know about the regional areas or even what type of harvests happen Downunder?
The Fairwork Ombudsman here in Australia (he’s here to protect the rights of workers) has released some handy information called “Top tips for backpackers and seasonal workers“, which is aimed at educating you about your rights with the aim of stopping you from being ripped off by unscrupulous employers. It also outlines your obligations when you’re employed by farmers.
Some of the top tips on their webpage include:
I. Find a legitimate employer who pays you properly. You should be paid at least $21.38 per hour and piece work arrangements should allow you to easily earn at least that amount per hour.
II. Don’t be tricked into work by people waiting at bus stops, stations or airports who “guarantee” you work.
III. Don’t respond to dodgy work adverts where no employer details are given, and make sure you know details of who is employing you such as their Australian Business Number (ABN).
IV. KEEP RECORDS of who you’re working for, days worked, payslips etc so that you can back up any doubt immigration may have that you have actually done the work.
Another organization, The National Harvest Labour Information Service has also released a fantastic and comprehensive booklet about harvest work, which crops are harvested when and where, as well as descriptions of lots of regional towns to help you find work and accommodation. You’ll find this fantastic booklet by clicking on the image below.
This link (click here) also provides links to available regional jobs that are currently available.
