Changes to “specified work” for UK Working Holiday Visa holders

08 Oct

Many of our UK Working Holiday Visa holders have been asking us about whether or not the great changes to the UK Working Holiday Visa mooted by the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison have occurred.

Unfortunately, the answer is NO, but there are definitely some good things to look forward to if you are a United Kingdom passport holder and you hold your first or second Working Holiday (Subclass 417) Visa.

What are the proposed changes?

In a nutshell, the changes include:

  • United Kingdom Working Holiday Visa holders will no longer be required to carry out “specified work”, including agricultural work, to be eligible for a second or third WHM Visa.
  • United Kingdom Working Holiday Visa holders will also have their age eligibility increased to 35 years which will put them in line with Canada, France and Ireland.

This means that UK Working Holiday Visa holders, can live, holiday and work in Australia for up to 3 years, up to the age of 35, without having to do 88 days of “specified work” (e.g. farmwork) in their first year and 6 months in their second year.

The “6 months” rule which limits Working Holiday Visa holders to six months with any employer (with some exceptions), will remain.

Why are the changes happening?

They are coming in because of the Australia – United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement ( EUKFTA) which is the first bilateral agreement that includes Working Holiday Visa arrangements.

According to the Australian government, more countries will be added once further agreements are negotiated.

This is great news for UK Working Holiday Visa holders! watch this space and we’ll let you know as soon as the changes come into reality.
